PRESS RELEASE
ISSUED BY MCGARVIE MORRISON MEDIA LTD
SHINTY AND WOMEN’S FOOTBALL TO BE CORNERSTONES OF FIRST EVER LIVE GAELIC SPORTS PROGRAMME.
The first ever live Gaelic sports programme SPORS, which will be broadcast on BBC2 on Thursday evenings, will have exclusive rights to the highlights from the World Cup qualifying matches played by the Scottish International Women’s Football team. SPORS will also include extended highlights from the top shinty match of the week, which will be filmed by a multi camera outside broadcast team.
The Editor of SPORS, Bob Kenyon, said: “This is an extremely exciting, news driven show, which will cover international, national and local sports. For the first time ever, shinty will be given regular coverage and we will also be showing highlights from three World Cup qualifying matches played by the Scottish International women’s football team.”
SPORS will also have a regular feature on European football in addition to the breaking news stories of the week and an in-depth interview with sports stars.
The Managing Director of MNE Television, Allan MacDonald, said: “We have put together a first-class on and off-screen team to bring sport to our television screens in a historic move for Gaelic broadcasting. This would not have been possible without a unique collaboration and partnership between MnE Television, the BBC and the Gaelic Media Service. Although this SPORS series is for eight programmes only, the team is raring to see the initiative continued - we hope the viewers have the same response.”
A spokesperson for the Gaelic Media Service said: “GMS recognizes the important role sport plays in television schedules and is pleased MNE Ltd and BBC Scotland have collaborated on this pilot series which, hopefully, will pave the way for future sports programming on a Gaelic Digital Satellite Channel.”
SPORS will be presented by the ex-Eorpa presenter, Patsi MacKenzie and John Morrison, who was, until recently, Scotland Correspondent with BBC Network news.
