Catriona & The Colourists

Catriona & The Colourists

Viewers will have another chance to see “Catriona & The Colourists” when this programme in last year’s Ealtainn series is re-shown on Thursday 5 May at 6.30pm

The group of artists known as the Scottish Colourists – Peploe, Cadell, Hunter and Ferguson, closed down their Edinburgh studios for the summer and sought the wonderful light of the West Highlands and Islands. Many glorious, and now famous paintings resulted.

Ealtainn travels with animator Catriona Black as she follows in their footsteps and attempts to make animations of some of their best known West Highland paintings. Working in the open air with acrylic paints and a 16mm film camera, this is a vastly different way of animating for Catriona who uses digital animation software in the comfort of her Edinburgh studio – working to a tight timetable with the elemental conditions of North West Scotland - can it be done?

Assisted by countryside ranger, James MacLetchie, Catriona treks around the West Highland way and the Isle of Iona, looking for the beaches and bays where the worked, looking for the positions and light the colourists employed to such effect. She explores their techniques and styles and ponders on what they were looking to capture in their paintings.

The programme was produced by MacTV and was funded by Seirbheis nam Meadhanan Gàidhlig.

A new series of Ealtainn will hit our screens later on this year.
